Bascome grabs late winner

(after extra time) Player-coach Andrew Bascome tore the heart out of St. George's when he scored the winning goal of this FA Cup third round match after 119 minutes at Wellington Oval yesterday.

It was a neat strike, coming when the swift Otis Minors glided down the right wing and crossed for the unmarked Bascome to hammer the ball home with precision from just inside the penalty box.

In a game riddled with finishing mistakes, St.George's seemed to be heading for victory when Clay Smith smartly headed them into the lead in the first half of extra-time, converting a cross from substitute Darren Walker after 93 minutes.

But the goal only served to wake up their opponents as within four minutes Minors netted from the penalty spot after centre-half Kervin Morano had handled.

Unlike other pitches on the Island, Wellington Oval was in good shape despite the rain, but neither team could take advantage of the conditions.

St.George's had the better of the exchanges in the first half and could have put their opponents away but for some miserable finishing. Among those blowing chances were forwards Clay Smith and Jerome Laws.

Smith had a good opportunity after 35 minutes but his superb header was brilliantly turned away by goalkeeper Kuhn Evans. Centre-back Neil Paynter also went close with a header while Mo reno had a fierce shot from 19 yards tipped over the bar by Evans.

St.David's stormed back in the second half, substitute Lionel Cann watching as his drive was tipped over by goalkeeper Earl Basden who was later injured and replaced.

St.David's lifted the tempo of their game with Sergio Goater placing a shot over from 19 yards and Cann thundering another blast over the top.

Anthony Darrell replaced the injured Basden in goal for St.George's after 89 minutes and had some pressure taken off his shoulders early in the first period of extra-time when Smith put St.George's ahead.

But St. David's played with renewed vigour and levelled the score through Minors' penalty.

Inspired by hard-working Del Hollis in midfield and Bascome up front, St.

David's raised their game with Bascome deservedly getting the winner.
