Two well-known lecturers to speak on macrobiotics
Bermuda at the end of this month to conduct a series of lectures and seminars on "the power of a natural foods diet and exercise.'' On March 29, medical sociology professor and author Mrs. Alexandra Todd will give a public lecture at the Wesley Methodist Church hall under the sponsorship of the Patients' Assistance League & Service (PALS).
Mrs. Todd wrote the book "Double Vision,'' in which she tells the story of her son Drew, a college student who recovered from a cancerous brain tumour through a regime that included the best of eastern and western medicine.
Not content to leave her son's care entirely to western medical practices, Mrs. Todd studied alternative approaches to treating the health complications of cancer, and insisted that they be used.
In addition to acupuncture, relaxation exercises and visualisations in which patients imagine themselves to be healed and healthy, her son followed a macrobiotic diet carefully prepared by his mother.
In fact, Mrs. Todd took a year off teaching at Suffolk University in Boston in order to prepare all of his meals, and ensured that each one contained all of the necessary nutritional elements.
Today, with Drew fully recovered and leading an active life as a post-graduate student, Mrs. Todd continues her career as a medical sociologist, and also speaks out on her belief that eastern and western medical traditions can be successfully combined in the healing practice, with macrobiotic eating being an important element.
Internationally popular teacher Ms Carry Wolf, who has taught seminars on the macrobiotic way of life throughout the US, Europe, and the Far East, will give a free public lecture on March 30 at Wesley Methodist Church hall, when her topic will be: "Food for body, mind and spirit.'' One of seven macrobiotic educators at the Kushi Institute in Massachusetts, Ms Wolf will also conduct a long weekend seminar entitled "You are what you Eat.'' The course will include lectures, exercise and cooking demonstrations aimed at creating better health, and will be sponsored by several local businesses. For further information on the above events, and to register for Ms Wolf's seminar, contact Mrs. Wendy Kyle at 295-3787.
