‘Cash raised is a huge boost for youngsters’
Hiscox’s contribution to youth cricket has been invaluable over the last nine years, said Neil Speight, CEO of the Bermuda Cricket Board, after $6,056 was raised from raffles for youth cricket during the festival.
According to Speight, Hiscox have confirmed that they will match the raffle proceeds, all of which will be used for the BCB youth development programmes, which include the summer camps for boys seven to 14, the three-week girls only cricket camp, after-school cricket for girls and the schools development officer provided by the Board.
“It’s a fabulous boost and we really wouldn’t be able to reach so many children without the support of an organisation of their stature,” Speight said. “Not only do their provide financial support to allow the children to play on a regular basis — we have over 200 boys and girls playing in the under-11 league regularly in addition to an All-star East versus West game and the celebrity festival, but they also get involved.
“Their employees have children who play in the league and some help with coaching.”
Added Speight: “We’ve been partnering with Hiscox for nine years and this is the sixth year that we’ve run the celebrity game. They are so valued as a partner that I’m hoping they go past Brian Lara’s record of 400 and are with us for 401 years! They jumped on board pretty soon after they came to the Island.
“They did sponsor the World Cup team, but have always had a great affinity to grassroots cricket and are very community minded.
“As a country we are lucky to have them here. They are great partners.”
