Senate approves financial assistance changes

Controversial legislation allowing conditions to be added to Government assistance was approved yesterday in the Upper House. The Financial Assistance Amendment Act, 2013, and Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Act, 2013, got the green light from Senators. The bills allow for life skills and parenting classes to be imposed if recipients are deemed to be in need of intervention.Yesterday’s sitting also saw the approval of the Bermuda Government Scholarships Amendment Bill, 2013.The amendment imposes a $35,000 cap on the scholarship, but extends its range from three to four years, and from students aged 17 to 23 to a new bracket of 16 to 25 years.“We intend to make regulations, immediately upon the assent of this Bill, to allow for scholarship recipients to receive funding from other sources,” added Government Senator Nalton Brangman, who said extra funding was not permitted under the current scholarship regime.
