December 12, 2012Dear Sir,I have been living in Bermuda for over 30 years and consider it to be my home. I am a white male with good friends from all sides of the political spectrum.I feel uncomfortable for the first time since I have been here. Once again the race card has come into play only this time worse than ever before. To an outsider one would think we do not get along at all and that all white people are devious and power hungry, anxious to take the island back.The latest rhetoric is the ‘secret agenda’. Watch out people, if the OBA get into power the white man is coming back to take over, shackles in hand. If I was a black member of the OBA I would be highly insulted. I cannot believe that there are members of the Bermudian community who would insinuate that black OBA members, should they be elected, would hide in back rooms and be told what to do. The fact is the UBP is dead. Gone. Over. Finished.When the PLP won power in 1998 I was ecstatic. It needed to happen. I probably upset my UBP friends when I told them months before the election that we needed a change. It was finally the beginning of a democracy.The popular song ‘Just got paid, Friday night, got money in my pocket’ was relevant with our 1998 economy.Step forward 14 years. ‘Didn’t get paid, Friday night, no money in my pocket’. The economy is sinking and we haven’t seen bottom yet.Gun violence is out of control. Unemployment is rife. Property values spiralling downwards and houses being repossessed as Bermudians can no longer afford to pay their mortgages. Companies and their employees leaving Bermuda, emptying houses and apartments, reducing spending in shops, restaurants and greatly reducing the tax base of the Government. Social programme funding cut completely or reduced.The PLP have done some necessary things. They did well on some fronts. They have certainly solved the housing crisis! Just look in the Bermuda Sun. Pages and pages of houses and apartments laying empty not including over 100 empty new housing units that were paid for by us, the taxpayers. But they are still going to build 100 more homes in Dockyard. What are they thinking?While they have had some successes, overall, they have done a lousy job! What happens when you do a lousy job? You get fired. It is time for a change like it was in 1998. It’s time Bermudians voted with their heads and not their hearts. The fear mongering pitting the races against each other has to stop.Governments that fail as badly as the PLP have do not win elections. When the opposition party is elected and they fail you have the option to vote them out of power at the next election.Bermuda is a country full of wonderful friendly people who have been divided by the election.The young people don’t know who the “Old Guard” were and don’t care!
