Make an educated decision

November 19, 2012Dear SirIt’s decision time! We’ve heard the rhetoric and propaganda in the lead-up to our general election. Many are apathetic with all the squabbling to date; perhaps willing not to make a difference, by exercising their right-to-vote. Might I say, anyone that does not utilise this human right, subsequently, has no right to complain, criticise or become frustrated by the outcome. This leads to the crux of my letter — democracy. Democracy is a form of government in which all eligible citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. Democracy allows eligible citizens to participate equally — directly or through elected representatives — in the proposal, development, and creation of laws. It encompasses social, economic and cultural conditions that enable the free and equal practice of political self-determination.A democratic government contrasts to forms of government where one, as in a monarchy, holds power or where power is held by a small number of individuals, as in an oligarchy (UBP). Nevertheless, these oppositions are now ambiguous because contemporary governments have mixed democratic, oligarchic, and monarchic elements. Democracy is in contrast to dictatorship or tyranny, thus focusing on opportunities for the people to control their leaders and to oust them without the need for a revolution. Several variants of democracy exist, but there are two basic forms, both of which concern how the whole body of eligible citizens executes its will. In most modern democracies, the whole body of eligible citizens remain the sovereign power but political power is exercised indirectly through elected representatives; this is called representative democracy. In a democracy the government exists to take care of the people of the nation. The government protects the rights of the people. The members of the government are elected by the people to do their work. On the other hand the people have to be loyal to the country. The people have to follow the rules and the laws set up by government. And most important of all: the people have to participate in the elections to be able to vote for their candidate. This is a constitutional right and if people do not vote it is not possible to maintain a democracy. Therefore my people, it’s time to make an educated, logical decision. In the throws of personal setbacks/hardship of many, it is hard to make a non-emotional decision, however, one will have to analyse the platforms/mandates, and make an informed decision. Consideration of sincerity, trust and leadership are but three components that should form the right choice.GLENN CHASEWarwick
