Bermuda’s young athletes were waiting anxiously last night to see if they had been selected to represent the Island in next month’s Carifta Games after competing in trials over the weekend. The weekend provided the athletes with one last chance to meet qualifying standards for their respective events.Bermuda Track and Field Association met last night to finalise the squad with limited places available for each event.Hopefuls involved in battles for spots heading into the weekend included six athletes vying for the Under-17 girls 100 and 200 metres, while three females were fighting for the two spots in the Under-17 1500 metres. The Under-17 long jump, Under-20 long jump, and Under-20 100 and 200 metres boys were also to be determined at the weekend.BTFA president Donna Watson has announced that tickets for the Games were almost sold out, with the local supporters expected to come out in droves to cheer on the local contingent.“We are hoping to have a team of around 40 athletes representing Bermuda at this year’s Carifta Games with 30 of them who have already met the standard,” said Watson.“Grand stand tickets are sold out and general admission tickets are going fast. All the technical elements are in place, the accommodation, the transportation, the officials have been trained and the stadium is prepared”.All the participating countries teams had to be in by last night’s deadline, with Jamaica, Barbados, Aruba, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Trinidad and Tobago among a host of nations to have already handed in their squads. The Bahamas, Cayman Islands and Bermuda staged their annual trials this weekend.More than 550 athletes from 27 countries are expected to take part in the Games, which will be held in Bermuda next month. The Games is an annual athletics competition consisting of track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping and throwing events, and relays. The Games has two age categories: under-17 and under-20, with only countries associated with Carifta being allowed to compete.
