BAA’s Spanish connection

UECornella, an affiliate of the Spanish Football Association, have earned a reputation for developing talent and pride themselves on providing a bridge for amateur and professional players.The most recent high profile players to pass through their ranks is Valencia left back Jordi Alba who made his second appearance for Spain against England at Wembley last weekend.Kenny Thompson, BAA’s technical director, said the link up was another milestone in the progression of the BAA football programme.“I am pleased and extremely proud of this relationship with UECornella which provides a unique opportunity for all of our players to continue their football, social and cultural development with a top football club in a top football environment,” he said.“As we continue to provide an environment whereby we develop and nurture players to maximize their potential, our coaches will also benefit in the same way from regular exposures and associations with our friends at UECornella through coach development opportunities.”BAA president John Doran believes the agreement is another step in the right direction for the club.“We have had a couple of other opportunities but we were looking for a partnership that was the right fit for BAA,” he said.“Both clubs are very much aligned in their approach to football and child development on a broader scope. This opportunity is immense as it not only gives our children more technical development but will also give them academic and life skills.”Andres Manzano, UECornella’s technical director, is excited about the partnership with Thompson’s side.“After two experiences here in Cornella with BAA managed by Kenny Thompson, we are really proud to start up this football development project in Bermuda. UECornella is one of the most renowned football Academies in Barcelona (Spain).“At this moment we are the club that is providing more players to the professional clubs in Spain. Also, within the next days we will sign an agreement with Barcelona, recognising us as their best provider of players, which is another sign that we working in the correct way.”Thompson took over as BAA’s technical director in August, 2010. Their senior team, coached by Maurice Lowe, lie in seventh place in the First Division.
