Photo by Glenn TuckerAnthony Richardson and his wife Holly were joined by Premier Paula Cox today, as Mr Richardson officially became the ruling Progressive Labour Party?s candidate for Devonshire South Central.

The battle lines were drawn yesterday as the three candidates in the Devonshire South Central by-election officially added their names to the ballot paper.Nomination Day saw the candidates commit to going head-to-head at Horticultural Hall in the Botanical Gardens. There were no surprises as One Bermuda Alliance leader Craig Cannonier, PLP candidate and former Accountant General Anthony Richardson and Independent candidate David Sullivan signed on the dotted line for the three-man race.Mr Cannonier was first to arrive at 11am on the dot, having stopped to greet tourists as he enthusiastically walked through the Botanical Gardens. Standing by his side was long-time MP and former interim OBA leader John Barritt, who resigned from the Constituency 12 seat.Mr Cannonier needs to win in order to get a House of Assembly seat and secure his position as Opposition Leader. He entered Horticultural Hall saying: “Let's get this over with.”He then walked out declaring it “a great day to finally make it official”.Mr Cannonier said: “I'm excited about getting to know the residents of Constituency 12, I find it enlightening to talk to them and hear their concerns.“I have been knocking on doors every night and that will continue as I'm not taking anything for granted. It's most important that the people get to know me.”Mr Cannonier hit back at critics who said he had been “parachuted in” to the constituency, saying he was “familiar in the area” as he owned the Collector's Hill Gas Station. He said: “I feel confident, I wouldn't be going into it if I didn't feel confident.“The OBA's greatest asset is that we can get Bermuda back on track. We believe in putting Bermuda first, getting things done and moving forward.”Mr Barritt urged voters “to focus on their decision” adding that “the OBA is the best alternative”.He said: “People have still got to know Craig and that's what we are doing intensely.“This is the first election the OBA has run and we'll be looking at it very closely, as I'm sure the whole of the Country will.”Mr Cannonier was also joined by his proposer John Kessaram, who said: “I believe in the OBA and I believe Craig is up to the job, he has a wide appeal and can help to move us forward.”The next candidate to appear, at about 11.30am, was Mr Richardson, who was joined by his wife Holly, Premier Paula Cox and PLP chairman Anthony Santucci.Mr Richardson remains hopeful that he can become a PLP MP in what was once seen as a UBP stronghold, saying: “I'm feeling great, I'm feeling positive, I'm charged and ready.“I have issued a challenge to the constituents to be bold and to make history for Bermuda.“If successful, the very next day I can access Ministers and make things happen.”Mr Richardson said discussions about him not having links to the area were “a distraction”. Instead he said he was “focusing on the real issues” of constituents, which he said included the economy and immigration.Ms Cox said people should vote for the PLP candidate “because he's bright, he's intelligent, and he cares about the community”.Former UBP deputy chairman Mr Sullivan was the third and final candidate to make an appearance at about midday. He was on his own and told the waiting media that he was “feeling enthused”.Mr Sullivan said his initial canvassing of about 160 homes had been “extremely positive” and he was confident standing as an Independent was what people wanted. He said: “People respect the fact that they are going to have a real choice, it is going to really give the constituents something to think about.“I am a man of principle and I believe I'm doing what needs to be done”.Mr Sullivan said he had been walking the streets doing “knuckle-breaking door knocking” and the mostly retired constituents were most concerned about economics. He added: “I think my chances are good, I'm fighting against two well-organised parties, but I'm well-seasoned in all of this.“I know what I'm up against in terms of negativity, falsehoods and character assassinations.“I have the experience, I have over 30 years in politics, my two components combined don't have that kind of experience”.Mr Sullivan said if elected his first job would be to host a constituency meeting “to listen to what the constituents want him to do”.Voting takes place on Tuesday, November 1 just three days before the reopening of Parliament.
