Don't waste your vote

October 5, 2011Dear Sir,My buddy David Sullivan seems to feel the need to throw his hat in the ring in Devonshire South. Notwithstanding that I know how he likes to opine and be part of the action, what point does his involvement serve? At best he gets elected and then there’s only 2 ways to vote – yea or nay – and I suspect that ole Dave’s blood is so UBP blue that Sir Henry would roll over in his grave if he voted PLP. At worst, he splits the vote and the PLP get the seat ... if that happened, ole Dave should start thinking about a move to Florida.I agree with him that party politics has worn out its welcome in Bermuda. I wish, as I suspect he does, that we could put up a slew of independent candidates and the first 36 get elected. Then anyone can do what they want. Not perfect but the bugs in the process today have created a paralysing polarisation that has contributed to our inability to solve problems, mainly because half of Bermuda is not involved. The trouble is that party politics is still with us and that’s the basis on which we elect people. As much as I wish it could change, all David will do is pour out all his great ideas that will solve all our problems without any hope of ever being able to implement them and with no worry about ever being held accountable. That’s the only reason David wants to run...so his ideas can be thrown out there because he has the country’s interest at heart. Message to David, all Bermudians have the solution to our problems. If Paula would just call on us, she would have the answers. Hell, if Terry Francona had just called me, the Red Sox would be in the play-offs!Since voting in Bermuda began, we have relied on candidates standing in a “constituency”. We have placed so much importance on the connection between that candidate and that constituency that we have lost sight of the reality which is that every MP is a “national” leader. We are so small in numbers that to think that any MP should have the interests of any one constituency foremost in his mind is ludicrous. Who cares whether Craig Cannonier grew up in Devonshire as opposed to somewhere else? The man will represent Bermuda, not just Devonshire South and David Sullivans bleating about he being a son of the soil and that the OBA ramming someone down the throats of the voters is all a bunch of parochial and meaningless malarkey.Enough said – but don’t waste your vote.POLLY SAWYERSouthampton
