Berry answers critics with record performance

Ashley Berry

Ashley Berry is the top 3000-metre runner in the latest CAC rankings after her record breaking performance in North Carolina.Berry, who outlined her Carifta Games credentials with an impressive performance at the Duke Invitational in the US recently, has been under scrutiny in the past weeks after she was selected ahead of Taylor Ashley-Bean who won a bronze at last year’s Games. But Berry showed her quality by finishing the 1500m in a time of four minutes, 47.04 seconds on Friday, and then smashed her Bermuda junior 3000m record with a time of 10:23.50. She came 13th out of 25 athletes in the 3000m.“This is a great accomplishment for Ashley and this puts her in a great position going into the Carifta Games,” said Donna Watson, Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president.“Ashley and her coach have sacrificed this season in order to prepare for Carifta and it looks like it is paying off.“She just needs to go to Carifta with confidence and she should be on the medal podium and hopefully on the top of the podium.“I knew Ashley was in great shape when she came home for her school break and qualified for the 1500m running the “A” standard. My hope is that she can medal in both events but we will take one if we have to.“This is the best shape she has ever been in and her –season going forward should be great.“With her already meeting the qualifying standard for Pan Am Juniors she can now enjoy the remainder of her University season and continue to post great times. Unfortunately because she red shirted her outdoor season she will not be able to assist Duke in generating points for their championships as she will continue to run –unattached until next –season.”Berry is also ranked 23rd in the CAC Women’s 1500 –metres.
