Loving Bermuda, but also missing Scotland
When Mrs. Donika York, my English teacher asked me if I would like to write an article for the local newspaper I was so excited!
I want people to know more about my experiences in Scotland because a lot of people ask me the same question all the time, "In Scotland does everyone wear those skirts?" I know people think it's funny to ask me, but not to me. They do not understand that they are not called skirts, they are called kilts, and they are used for formal occasions and not every day.
I was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Glasgow is one of the biggest cities in Scotland. I am 11 years old and I came to Bermuda when I was only 18 months old. My grandmother was sad to see me leave, and my mom told me later on that I cried a lot to leave her too. Bermuda was going to be a new home for me. I remember my mom telling me all about "How I was excited as a child but at the same time upset because I was leaving my family behind."
What I miss about Scotland is that all of my family and some friends are still there. When I go back to Scotland I am thrilled, but when I leave I wish I could stay longer. I feel the same way when I leave Bermuda; I just miss everything about it really. It's the silly things I miss about it the most. For example, the smell of the fresh air, the busy pigeons, and the multi colours of gum stuck on the sidewalk. It's so hard leaving because I get so attached to these things.
My trip back home to Scotland this summer was great! My family and I caught a plane to Gatwick airport and then another plane to get to Scotland.
"I visited all of my family and I was excited to learn that my uncle and his girlfriend just had a baby and I was able to meet my new baby cousin. She was so cute! My dad took me to a place called South Queensferry. It was very interesting there.
" I also visited a place called Deep Sea World. I had one of the best times ever! My favourite shop in Scotland is a shop called Primark. I just love everything in it! Half of my clothes in my closet are from Primark. When we came back to Bermuda, my family and I caught a flight back and it was seven hours long! I was so tired of flying.
Like Bermuda has Bermuda Day, in Scotland we have St. Andrews Day. We eat a meat called haggis. Haggis is a seasoned meat that tastes so good! To describe exactly what haggis is may sound gross, so I won't, but when you taste it you will love it. I love Bermuda but boy, oh boy, do I miss Scotland.
