Fundraisers bring in $4,000 for local charities

Glad rags: Students don '80s outfits during Saltus' recent Rag Week fun.

A tradition that began almost a decade ago has once again proved successful in raising money for charities.

From March 23rd to 25th, Saltus enjoyed fun events, themed grub days and other fund-raisers in an attempt to help those less fortunate both in Bermuda and internationally.

This year, more than $4,000 was raised, throughout the Senior Department. This huge sum of money, one of the largest since Rag week began, was split between Forever Angels, a Tanzanian orphanage, and PALS, the local Bermuda charity.

Rag Week, founded by a former Saltus teacher, Miss Hucker, began on the principle of Raise and Give (RAG).

This principle has stuck with the tradition throughout the years. Although Rag Week no longer spans a full week, the amount of money raised hasn't suffered from this.

These events are organised by the student council under the leadership of Ellisse Johnston and Nicholas Rinehimer, with Miss Crabb as a teacher supervisor.

Some events this year were the infamous Silly Sports, the Line-of-Coins, a Capture-the-Flag, a Scavenger Hunt, 80s Day grub day, and a normal grub day.

On a side note, there was an organised rock-climbing event, and a sponsored read took place, in the morning of the first day.

One lunch time SGY students held a particularly successful BBQ, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, ice-cream and drinks.

For the future, Rag Week will continue to provide money to charities, both local and international, with students and teachers alike all having fun for a number of good causes.
