Bars count down to the World Cup
Hamilton bars and restaurants are counting down to the start of the FIFA World Cup, installing additional televisions and organising special deals to entice football fans inside.
There's free hot dogs on offer at The Beach, smoking is an option at Spring Garden Restaurant & Bar and everyone is promising huge screens with plenty of vantage points.
"We plan to be open for all the games and will be showing them in high definition," said Duncan Adams, general manager of The Beach.
The Front Street bar is installing new audio and video equipment to get ready for the games and its owner, Rick Olson, is handing out free hot dogs before lunchtime to hungry customers.
There are also happy hour drink prices throughout the monthlong tournament.
Moon also plans to get in on the World Cup action. According to manager David Madeiros, the vibe at the Front Street club will be "comfortable" and "laid-back".
The premises will be open for all of the games except for early mornings with drink specials offered throughout.
Chris Garland, general manager of the Emporium Building's Flanagan's and Outback Sports Bar. He insisted they were the places to be for a "true sports" atmosphere.
Outback offers private booths with personal televisions. It also has many larger televisions mounted throughout the bar. Both Flanagan's and Outback will be open for every game.
Paul Musson, manager of Captain's Lounge on Reid Street plans to show all the games except for the early morning matches.
"We have a comfortable, local, relaxed atmosphere," he said. "We have a lot of regulars and this is a great place to catch up with friends, have a drink and watch the football."
Spring Garden owner and manager Victor Alleyne said his establishment offers something that most others don't a smoking section.
"If you come to the Spring Garden for the World Cup you can have a good meal, good drink and because it is open-air you don't need to leave the bar to have a smoke," he said.
Watching the World Cup at Casey's Lounge on Queen Street is a tradition for many Bermudians claimed owner Gladwin Phillips.
"We will be showing each game in its entirety and have just installed some new high-definition televisions to watch them on," he said. "We have had a good crowd for every World Cup and it has become a kind of tradition. We are expecting the afternoon games to be really busy."
The Robin Hood Pub will be showing every single game said general manager Jillian Summers.
"We are the number one sports bar in Bermuda we have the best food and the best prices," said Ms Summers. "We probably would have installed new televisions for the games but we have so many already there is no space."
According to Reed Young, co-owner of Docksiders, the Front Street landmark is the place to be. He said the newly renovated pub will show all of the games on their many high-definition televisions.
"We have added staff and improved our service and I think we have created a great atmosphere," said Mr. Young. "We will be serving coffee and breakfast for the early games and we hope to offer some country-specific dishes when certain teams are playing.
"For example, if Italy is playing we will offer Italian food. People should come watch the games here for the camaraderie, quality and fun atmosphere."
The first match of the World Cup between South Africa and Mexico begins this Friday at 11 a.m. Bermuda time.
