Coach Tucker relishes first title triumph

Southampton Rangers talisman Janeiro Tucker has praised his side's team ethic after celebrating his first Premier Division title as the club's player-coach.

Rangers were crowned champions on Sunday after thrashing second place Bailey's Bay at Sea Breeze Oval.

And Tucker, who hit a brisk 54 runs, said he was delighted Rangers would go to last season's champions, St.David's, this weekend with the title already safe under wraps.

"To win the league for the first time as the coach is a pleasure," said Tucker. "But we will look to win it again next season and hopefully everything else will fall into place.

"It feels good not only for myself but also the players who finally got over the hurdle to win our first league in a few years.

"To come out and win the match on Sunday, to clinch the league, is an exciting feeling for everyone.

"We have won it now and we can now be classified as the best team on the Island."

The loss of talented all-rounder Malachi Jones to Willow Cuts during the pre-season had threatened to derail Rangers' title charge this campaign.

And while things have not gone their way for the whole season, relinquishing both their Belco Cup and Western Counties crowns to rivals PHC, Rangers still managed to add another chapter to their storied history by winning their first title for four years.

They had a chance to claim the league last week against PHC but let that opportunity slip through their fingers.

"We had been talking about the scenario for a few weeks now, we needed to win to ensure it wouldn't come down to the last day and needing a win against St. David's," said Tucker.

"We have come this far and to throw it all away would be devastating considering the position we have been in.

"So we talked about it and all the players committed to ending the drought over the weekend."

Tucker said the Premier Division had been the team's priority at the start of the season and hailed seam duo Treddie Simpson and Quinton Burch for helping soften the blow of losing pace ace Jones.

"Our goal was always to win the league as it makes you the best team in the league, so to win it shows that we have fought hard throughout the season and have put in the time and energy to make it all possible," he said.

"The Belco Cup and the Western Counties are bonuses for us, the league title was always our goal. Whenever you lose a player like Malachi it's a big loss but we also had players capable of taking his place, Treddie and Burch both bowled well.

"We have the players to fill gaps and make a contribution towards the overall goals of the club. "We will sit down during the off-season and talk about what needs to be done for next term, but the main objective will be to win the league again."
