Help those who want to help you
The African proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child", is quoted often. It implies that there are many who contribute towards the positive upbringing of a child. Yet there is rarely mentioned the role that child plays in his or her development.
As an educator for over 12 years, it still amazes me how ineffective the "village" idea is when the child in question takes a nonchalant approach to the efforts.
I have seen teachers, counsellors and others extend themselves to rally around a child with social, emotional or academic challenges.
Students, you must be an active participant in your own development. Each day, you are responsible for coming to a situation with a spirit of willingness – a willingness to listen, a willingness to engage, a willingness to try.
I know that being a young person can be challenging, but just imagine how more challenging life will be if you are not academically, socially or emotionally prepared for adulthood.
Do not allow others to determine what you can do or where you can go.
Be the sailor of your course; the designer of your destiny.
