Bascome's Blazers show promise with gutsy win
Andrew Bascome believes Boulevard are ready to launch a sustained assault on the Premier Division title after watching his gutsy team hold off perennial challengers North Village.
The tabletoppers followed up their surprise win over defending champions PHC on the opening day of the season with another 'big name' culling by beating the Rams 2-1 at Bernard Park on Sunday.
"I guess I've been surprised by the start we've made to the season," said Bascome, who is set to be interviewed for both of Bermuda Football Association's vacant posts of national team coach and youth director.
"To be honest we were just looking to not get beaten by PHC and Village. Although I believe we can challenge for the title, we can't afford to be complacent just because we've won two games."
An Ajani Gibbons penalty midway through the second-half broke the deadlock and Takayhi Walker extended the visitors' lead who were then reduced to ten men when skipper Mel Gibbons was dismissed for two bookable offences.
Impressively Blazers managed to absorb Village's late pressure and by defending deep, they frustratingly swallowed up the space available for the hosts' attacking outlets.
With the last kick of the game, though, Village midfielder Jemeiko Jennings did finally manage to breach Blazers' unyielding backline, curling in a free kick from the edge of the box.
Bascome added: "I think we showed a lot of character especially after being reduced to ten men. We want to become hard to beat and strong defensively, our attacking fluidity will come later in the season."
In fairness, Blazers were hardly bereft of 'character' under former coach John Rebello. It's just his successor Bascome seems to have sprinkled his magic dust over the players and supplemented their 'balls and bottle' with equally admirable attributes, discipline and organisation.
At Wellington Oval, Dandy Town downed Premier Division new boys Hamilton Parish 2-0.
Two first-half strikes by Raymond Beach gave the visiting Hornets their first league victory of the season.
After losing their opening league fixture to Devonshire Cougars, Town found their touch with Beach leading the way. He scored first after 15 minutes and again five minutes later the Hornets finished the half in full control.
But Parish came back strongly after the break and only some superb goalkeeping by Town's Mikkail Crockwell kept the home team at bay.
Parish were let down by their top goalscorer Jamie Smith who had a few good chances but either placed them high or wide of the posts.
Crockwell's heroics earned him the man-of-the-match honours.
In the Premier Division's other match, PHC chalked up their first win of the season by beating Southampton Rangers 2-0 at Southampton Oval thanks to goals from Jahnai Raynor and Chris Furbert.
