Cedars will be distributed to every student in Bermuda as part of the 400-year anniversary celebrations.

Bermuda Cedar trees are to be distributed to every student in Bermuda as part of the Island's 400th anniversary celebrations.

The Ministry of Education yesterday joined forces with Save Open Spaces (SOS) at the group's greenhouse, in Devonshire, to announce that more than 6,000 trees will given out over the next four to six months.

Each student, and school staff, will be allowed to either take the tree home and plant it, give it to a friend, or plant it at their school.

An Education spokesperson said: "We realise not all students have somewhere to plant a tree so we will also be working with Ministry of Environment and others to plant them in parks and other open spaces."

Chairperson of SOS, Stuart Smith said: "We are hoping to raise awareness with the students on endemic plants and trees.

"We are using the distribution of the cedar trees as an educational tool which the students can utilise for the rest of their lives, as they will be watching the tree grow, smelling, touching and appreciating its beauty while they nurture it over the years."

Mr. Smith said SOS had had a great success in propagating the trees, allowing them to be distributed to the students.
