Series looks at history of women in Bermuda

The Royal Gazette's Newspapers in Education programme has launched its latest series entitled "Hearth and Home: A History of Women in Bermuda." The first in the series was published on Tuesday, and the second in the series appears in today's issue on page 28.

The series gives a general overview of the political and economic status of women, slave and free, through the centuries, and in each instalment highlights one or two individuals who epitomise the position of women in that particular period. Eight instalments will appear on consecutive Tuesdays and Thursdays during Heritage Month.

The series is illustrated with postcards created by local students as part of the 400 for 400th International Student Art Exhibition. The exhibition, organised by the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and the St. George's Foundation, encouraged students to "let loose their keen artistic eyes and to freely interpret their understanding and appreciation of history."

The body of work is now on display at the ACE Gallery until June 12. It will go on display again in St. George's at the World Heritage Centre from July 1 to August 30 before travelling to the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg, Virginia. This travelling exhibition allows the diverse and multi-faceted heritage of Bermuda to be shared with a global audience.

The Newspaper in Education programme is grateful to the Masterworks Museum and the St. George's Foundation for the opportunity to use selected works in its series celebrating the challenges and achievements of Bermudian women through its history.
