Bermuda Music Festival is going to be 'very, very special', promises promoter Newman

Bermuda can look forward to an amazing show when this year's Music Festival opens, according to the man behind the event.

Rock Newman, of Gibraltar Productions, was responsible for last year's star-studded line up and this year he is producing Quincy Jones and Friends.

He said on the opening night, there will be local artists performing as well as a new group called Naturally 7.

"And for all the single ladies, these are seven very handsome, very talented men, who play an instrument, or instruments, with their voices," said Mr. Newman.

"Arguably, a lot of Bermudians haven't heard of them, but when they come and when they leave they will have set this Island on fire. I'm telling you, these guys are so very talented and so much fun to watch."

"Great, great voices, great, great performers, great, great harmonisers and they do it all without acoustics or equipment, just their voices."

Following Naturally 7 will be Erykah Badu. "I recently did an interview with Erykah and she is so excited about coming to the Island," added Mr. Newman.

Closing Thursday night will be Wyclef Jean. "One of the best kept secrets in the music industry is what an incredible live performance that he puts on," said Mr. Newman.

Every night there will be a unique tribute to the late Michael Jackson. "Quincy was so instrumental in Michael's career and there will be a unique tribute each night to Michael, so that is something else the audience can look forward to."

Friday's show will include an award for Quincy Jones for his lifetime of musical excellence, his universal philanthropic endeavours and his long rein of being a great role model. He will be presented with the African Diapora Heritage Trail Award by Premier Ewart Brown.

On Friday, the Bermuda Mass Choir, led by Dainavan Tuzo, will also take the stage once again, backing some of the performers. Patti Austin, Michael McDonald, James Ingram, and Kenny Rogers will also perform on Friday.

Mr. Newman added: "They will be playing in front of Quincy Jones, his band and orchestra, which will consist of some of the top musicians in the world. One of them is Greg Philaganes.

"He has played for everyone from Prince to Michael Jackson, he is the musical director for Lionel Richie and he is thought to be one of the greatest musicians produced in this country [the US].

"And Quincy's Band and Orchestra will be composed of some international players and some Bermuda players. And with Quincy conducting, the place is going to be rocking."

On Saturday, Mr. Newman said there would be another performance by the Quincy Jones Band and Orchestra.

"John Legend thought he was coming here a few years ago and he didn't make it, and now that he is coming he is just so excited about coming. He sees Quincy as his quintessential role model in the music industry."

Bermuda's own Gombeys will also be taking part on Saturday and will do a re-enactment of the 'Thriller' video.

"I'm telling you, this place is going to be on fire. The feeling that I have is that every single Bermudian and visitor will be able to witness three nights of music that they will never forget," added Mr. Newman.

"Every night people are going to walk out of the stadium saying, 'I have just seen one of the most special musical nights of my life'.

"We are going to sell this thing out, I just hope that people read this and understand and rush to get their tickets, because to miss this is to miss something very, very special.

The Music Festival is set to take place at The Keep in the Maritime Museum in Dockyard from October 29 to 31. Tickets are available from www.bdatix.com.
