Khano's future up in the air

Free agent Khano Smith will seek a move to an English or Norwegian club if he can't thrash out a new, improved contract with MLS giants New England Revolution.

Smith's deal terminated when the Boston-based outfit crashed out of the MLS play-offs against Chicago Fire last week to leave the lanky long-strider contemplating life away from Gillette Stadium.

The Bermuda international has made no secret of his desire to learn a foreign tongue and embrace a new culture in order to grace the European stage – with his agent already alerting teams in Northern Europe of his availability.

His former Revolution team-mate Pat Noonan signed with Norwegian side Aalesunds FK earlier this year before making a swift return to the MLS with Columbus Crew. But Smith said he had not been put off by Noonan's brief flirtation with the Norwegian Premier League, stressing: "Just because it didn't work out for Pat doesn't mean it wouldn't work out for me."

Despite Smith's willingness to explore his overseas options, his preference would still be to put pen to paper on a new Revolution contract if an offer was made and deemed acceptable. Encouraging talks have been held between both parties althougth Smith is not expecting his future to be resolved anytime soon.

"My preference would be to stay at Revs," Smith told The Royal Gazette. "I love the club, I love Boston and I've forged some close friendships here. I had a meeting with the coaches and they said they would love to have me back and I would love to go back. However, the contract has to be right for me.

"I do have other options and my agent has arranged for me to go training at a few clubs in England and Norway if I don't re-sign – it's something I'm very open to. Obviously Revs have a figure of what they want to offer me but I have a figure of what I want to earn."

A move to another MLS franchise has also not been ruled out by Smith, 27, who signed for Revolution after impressing during their pre-season sojourn to Bermuda in 2005. He has since played in two successive MLS Cup finals and lifted the US Open Cup and SuperLiga trophy.

Attempts were made to re-negotiate Smith's Revolution contract last year but nothing materialised and it was decided to put talks on ice until the end of the season.

Smith was forced to sit out Revolution's entire play-off series against Chicago Fire as part of a three-match ban after being shown a red card for serious foul play for a tackle on Kansas City Wizards forward Herculez Gomez.

He added: "It was frustrating to have to miss such crucial games but that's life and you have to move on. It's just at the moment I don't know what I'm moving on to."
