Best of ISL no match for American visitors
The Bermuda All-Stars failed to make the most of home field advantage as they were defeated 4-2 by their American counterparts in the annual Island Soccer League (ISL) All-Star game on Sunday.
Goals from Storm striker Angelo Simmons and Arsenal forward Cecoy Robinson weren't enough to prevent the ISL side going down to the National Indoor Soccer League (NISL) All-Stars at the National Sports Centre (NSC).
Ultimately the ISL outfit were outclassed by their professional opponents but coaches Gary Adams and Keishon Smith said they were pleased their players were given the opportunity to test their mettle against the best in the US.
Knights coach Smith believed the showpiece match would prove to be a worthwhile exercise for the local players who would hopefully learn from the game style and tactics employed by their opponents.
"We were playing against guys where football is their job," said Smith. "It was an eye opener for us, we learned a lot and we had to adjust to their multiple line-up changes and things of that nature.
"I just hope the fans enjoyed the match because that is why we are here.
"You can see that our play is getting better and we as a league just need to continue forward and it will be a success.
"There is still a lot of learning to be done. David (Bascome) is getting the necessary coaching for the coaches and we will get to the next level."
Simmons put the hosts ahead before Matt Stewart equalised shortly after. Then Robbie Ariscobeno increased the NISL side's advantage.
Mike Lookingland made the score 3-1 in the second quarter but the gap should have been reduced back to one when Aquino Grant somehow missed from six yards out when it seemed easier to score.
The NISL made it 4-1 when Bato had a simple tap-in. Robinson proved what to be no more than a consolation goal for the ISL.
Coach Adams backed Smith's thoughts on the difference between the two sides, adding: "Their style of play was a little more organised than ours.
"They had more teamwork and the thing that killed us was their running off the ball and their understanding of moving into space.
"They had a very organised team aspect of the game."
Angelo Simmons will be heading for a trial at Bascome's Baltimore Blast in the fall. Simmons had an impressive summer season with the ISL's Storm and Bermuda's Under-23s and now has the chance of earning a professional deal in the US.
