Allen Temple One Hundred Men urged to 'get in the right fight'
The Allen Temple Youth Center in Somerset was packed to overflowing Saturday last for the 14th annual One Hundred Men Fellowship Breakfast.
The patrons were led by Bro. Eugene Wainwright of Bailey's Bay in some robust singing of several choruses such as "We're Together Again" and "What a Fellowship" followed by vocal and instrumental solos, personal testimonies, reading of the Scriptures and prayer by Dr. Glen Bascome.
Then followed two feasts, first an all you can eat typical Bermuda codfish and potatoes breakfast with all the trimmings, and secondly, a straight from the shoulder, "man to men" address by the Rev. Melvin E. Wilson on the theme of "Do you know who you are what kind of man are You?"
Rev. Wilson is the pastor of St. Luke AME Church at Amsterdam Avenue in New York City. He made a lightning 36-hour trip to Bermuda to be the guest speaker. He was given a standing ovation at the end of his 20-minute presentation.
He challenged his listeners to examine themselves and to ask one another "Do we know who we are, and what kind of men are we?"
Were they men who knew how to prioritise the things of this life such as their own finances, who know what is important with a level of seriousness about the things of God, who are concerned about the development of the kingdom of God, who pray and listen to God?
Or were they men who were more concerned about the presentation of their machismo, so that the ladies know how big and bad they are so far as doing what ever was needed need to do to satisfy them. Or were they men who were prepared to fight the good fight and stand up for what is right?
Rev. Wilson commended to them the example of Gideon in sorting out 300 men from an original thirty thousand, who he finally led in battle, saving his city.
"You and I have to watch the people we hang with, because association breeds assimilation. You don't want to hang with weak folk because the spirit of fear and weakness can get inside of you.
"Touch a brother and say, brother, get in the right fight. It's all right to fight, but get in the right fight.
"Fight the good fight of faith, against hell, sin and damnation. God wants men who will listen to Him, whom he can count on; who will make no excuses."
The breakfast was a prelude to the Annual Men's Day observances at Allen Temple set for February 21, when the guest speaker will be Bishop James L. Davis, prelate of the 9th AME Church District.
