UBP questions status of Dockyard concrete silos
During the Motion to Adjourn Friday, Opposition MP Patricia Gordon Pamplin questioned the status of the concrete silos in Dockyard.
She said that one of the reasons the Government was able to take control of the silos away from the stakeholders of the Bermuda Cement Company was the insistence that the silos be demolished.
Despite being in new hands, she said that no actions were being taken to demolish the silos.
"All of those conditions that we required have now been set aside," she said. "Wedco has no plans to see the silos demolished.
"I hold no grief for the individual who used to own the business, but I am perched on the side of principle."
Government MP Walter Lister said that the issue will be dealt with in due course, adding that during their time in power, the UBP ran the silos "like North Rhodesia".
Leader of the Opposition Kim Swan reiterated Mrs. Gordon-Pamplin's comments, saying that the cement company had been turfed out, saying the incident again brings up the question if bids are being tendered and if some individuals are getting favourable treatment.
"This should concern the Government as much as it concerns the business community."
While Works and Engineering Minister Derrick Burgess rejected any implication that anything illegal was going on, Mr. Swan insisted that he was only raising concern as to how things have been handled.
