'Verbatim' House of Assembly reports move a step closer

Bermuda is "in reach" of its first official Hansard to provide a written record of the proceedings of the House of Assembly, according to Dame Jennifer Smith.

The pilot project to provide the verbatim account of proceedings in the Lower House will continue over the summer, she revealed yesterday.

"This ability will allow for greater reflection on the debates in the House, creating the opportunity for future generations to see and hear exactly what was said to shape the governing bodies of our Country," she said.

Dame Jennifer, who is chairman of the House and Grounds Committee, told MPs they'd been given individual verbatim copies of speeches they made during the May 7 House session.

She urged them to read them as soon as possible, and return them to her with any corrections.

"As a reminder, the edited transcript should remain an accurate account of what was said, and words may not be added or subtracted to change the meaning of the original speech," she warned politicians.

That, she added, meant it was fine to change things where their accent may not have been understood — but not when they simply do not like what they said.
