In 1981, an attempted coup began in Spain as 200 members of the Civil Guard, led by Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero, invaded the lower house of Parliament, the Congress of Deputies, taking lawmakers hostage. The attempt collapsed 18 hours later, when King Juan Carlos took to the airwaves.
