Evans' new record fastest in US college athletics this year

Aaron Evans (left) smashed his own Bermuda record in the 800 metres in the US over the weekend just weeks after breaking Steve Burgess' previous best time which had stood for 25 years.

Evans' blistering time of one minute, 46 seconds at the Regionals in Greenboro was the quickest ran by a US college athlete this season and broke the University of Georgia record.

The 20-year-old will now join compatriot Arantxa King at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon from June 9 to 12.

Earlier this month, Evans posted a 1:47 finish at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Championship, Tennessee, to shatter Burgess' 1985 national record.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, heaped upon Bermuda's most promising young track star.

"Aaron has set a new Bermuda national record running 1:46.26, smashing the University of Georgia record and having the fastest time in the 800 metres in the United States out of all the universities," said Watson. "That speaks volumes of how our Bermuda athletes are performing . . ."

A statement from the University of Georgia read: "Evans, who topped the school record with a mark of 1:47.00 at the SEC meet to take second in the finals, made a new number one mark by winning the 800 metres in Greensboro.

"Battling against LSU's Richard Jones, who edged him for the conference crown, in the third heat, Evans shot to a finish of 1:46.26 and won his event.

"His time is the fastest in the nation this year for a collegian and improves his own national record for Bermuda in the event."

Meanwhile, Bermuda's Tristan Joynes finished second in the 110 metres hurdles with a finish of 14.89 at the TSAA State Track Championships in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, at the weekend.

His school, Christian Brothers, took home the state championship.
