Six of the Island's elite junior athletes received Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards for excellence in their respective sports and academics last week at a presentation ceremony held at the Berkeley Institute.

The awards are held annually in honour of late local rugby star and schoolteacher Denton Hurdle.

Those selected from a host of nominees were Nyisha Saunders and Mikkail Crockwell, both from Berkeley Institute, Jordan Bascome (West End Primary), Justin Ferreira (Warwick Academy), Patience Lowe (Clearwater Middle School) and Jair Minors (Saltus).

Saunders, who swept aside competition for the girls' high school award, was part of the Bermuda Women's Soccer side who took part in the Island Games last year, while the high school boys' prize went to Crockwell who was part of his school's track and field team as well as suiting up for Premier League football side, Dandy Town, and was a member of the Island's Under-20 national team.

Minors won the Middle School boys' division after playing for the Bermuda Under-14 football team who travelled to Switzerland last year as well as anchoring the Saltus relay team to gold in the Inter-School sports meet.

Lowe was awarded the Middle School girls' prize for her outstanding performances in track and field.

In the Primary School boys' division, Ferreira was honoured for his performance in triathlon prospects, while Primary girls' champion Bascome took place in January's Primary School Front Street Mile.
