Bermuda drop down a division
Bermuda have been relegated back to the Davis Cup Americas Zone Group IV after going winless in their Group III ties in the Puerto Rico last week.
Competing in Group B against Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Costa Rica, the team consisting of David Thomas, Neal Towlson, Naim Azhar and Gavin Manders, lost all three ties, putting themselves in the relegation round-robin pool against Costa Rica and Aruba.
Previous results against nations in the two pools counted; meaning Bermuda's loss to Costa Rica in group play already had them 0-1 before their clash with Aruba.
In round-robin play, the squad went down 2-1 to Aruba with Manders winning his second match of the tournament.
Manders got Bermuda off to a good start, beating Clifford Giel 6-4, 6-2 to give the side a 1-0 lead in the best of three games.
Towlson then went down to Aruba's team captain Gian Hodgson 1-6, 2-6, setting up a third and decisive game to decide who went down and who lived to fight another day.
In the third match, it was Manders and Towlson who lost in straight sets 3-6, 3-6 to seal the Island's fate.
Costa Rica kept their status with the win over Bermuda, thus condemning the Island to life back in Group IV.
Needing a win over Haiti on Friday to avoid the relegation round-robin, Bermuda lost 3-0.
They were defeated in their opening tie to hosts Puerto Rico 3-0, before Manders made history by winning Bermuda's first match in Group III play with his 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 over Pablo Nunez.
