Two-horse race promises thrilling finish
Dandy Town and North Village are facing a nerve-shredding end to the Premier Division season as the championship race reaches its climax this weekend.
The Hornets hold the destiny of the title firmly in their own hands after nudging ahead of Village by one point following the Rams' damaging draw at Southampton Rangers last Sunday.
It means that regardless of how Village fare at Somerset Eagles, victory over PHC at Southampton Oval will guarantee Hornets their first title since the 2003/04 season.
Supporters of both clubs will be glued to the action with joy and despair in equal measure, none moreso than Dandy Town vice-president, Michael Weeks, who is braced for a nail-biting afternoon.
"I'll certainly be checking up on how Village are getting on at White Hill Field every ten minutes or so," said Weeks. "But our fate is in our own hands and if we win then it doesn't matter how Village get on, that's a nice position to be in.
"However, we certainly can't afford to take PHC lightly, they're no slouches and we're expecting a tough game. They're certainly not going to roll over for us."
Bernard Park had looked like the most likely destination of the title after Shaun Goater's team hammered Hornets 3-1 in their own backyard earlier this month to climb to the league's summit.
But with the advantage now firmly back in Hornets' favour, Weeks is urging his team to make the most of their second chance.
"We have another bite of the cherry with North Village faltering against Southampton Rangers and we have to make the most of it," he said.
"You need that little bit of luck in football and we now have the advantage."
A sluggish start to the season had threatened to derail Dandy Town's title challenge with the team languishing near the bottom of the table after losing three of their opening four matches.
According to Weeks, Hornets' startling home defeat against recently relegated Hamilton Parish in late October proved to be the catalyst for their resurgence.
"We started the season very slowly and I think a few people had written us off. Our coach (Scott Morton) had just left and we got knocked out of a few of the cup competitions.
"I think our defeat against Hamilton Parish early in the season really shocked us. Since then we've really turned things around."
Should Town emerge as the title winners, Weeks is confident they would be able to keep hold of their key experienced players like skipper Jared Peniston, Lashun Dill, Raymond Beach and Damon Ming.
The impressive displays of the team's home-grown talent has also been particularly pleasing for Weeks, a PLP backbencher.
"We've built a strong squad at Dandy Town and winning the title will enable to us to hang on to all of our key players.
"The performances of our young players have been really pleasing. Although Nahki Wells has deservedly taken the headlines, players like Jamal Swan, George Dyer and Kwonde Lathan have also really stepped up for us.
"Our skipper Jared Peniston has also had an outstanding season in defence, he really deserves a mention."
