BIFF's award winners

The 12th Bermuda International Film Festival ended on Saturday with 'Moscow, Belgium' adding another win to its impressive resume, scooping up the Mary-Jean Mitchell Green Award for Best Narrative Feature.

The film depicts a fender bender which sends a single mother and a much younger man on a collision course toward love in this comic drama.

Film critic David Poland, who was a member of the BIFF jury which selected the film, said: "'Moscow, Belgium' is a portrait of a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown that creates a breathless intimacy rarely seen in modern cinema."

The film, which was directed by Christophe Van Rompaey, has also won the ACID Award, Grand Golden Rail and SACD Screenwriting Award at Cannes as well as the Best Film Award at the Denver Film Festival.

A Special Jury Prize was also awarded to director Mani Masserat-Agah's 'Ciao Bella' and 'West of Pluto', directed by Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault.

The documentary film jury, which included filmmakers Suzanne Chisholm and Emmanuel Itier, selected 'Garbage Dreams' by director Mai Iskander as Best Documentary.

Ms Chisholm said: "Much more than a simple environmental story, 'Garbage Dreams' is a compelling and compassionate portrait of modern-day Cairo and its very modern problems. It gives us a window to the vibrant human culture of this great city, and reminds us that the best solutions to our environmental problems are often found within the very human nature around us."

A Special Jury Prize went to 'Faubourg Treme: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans' by directors Dawn Logdson and Lolis Eric Elie.

In the short film category, 'In the Dark' by director Alex Fazeli won the Bermuda Shorts Award.

Filmmaker Charles Reilly, who was on the jury, said: "'In the Dark', with its creative cinematography and direction, evoked a sense of darkness and tension throughout, including a twist in the ending that left us wishing it wasn't over. There is a feature-length film in this short."

A Special Jury Prize was also awarded to 'Dolores', directed by Manuela Moreno.

The Bacardi Limited Audience Choice Award has not been announced yet.
