Hammers dreadful in Premier League opener

What an opening weekend for English Premier League fans who were treated to goals and high paced action from games all over the country!

However, my beloved West Ham were poor at best.

The Hammers were awful, that is the only way I can put it. Some of the players need to look at themselves in the mirror and the coach needs to get a few of them to one side and tell them the truth.

It was a diabolical display on our part. For the first game of the season you have come out better than that.

Tottenham looked extremely good on the opening day, although they got beat in their Champions League match a few days' ago, and will be a top side this year.

In the game against Manchester City I thought they were superb and could have easily won 3-0 if they had taken their chances. They didn't and City were able to wrestle a point away from White Hart Lane.

The game was a typical English clash – fast paced, with passing crisp, and there was a great atmosphere.

And in the end Spurs were unlucky not to win.

With City, it will take time for the side to gel especially with the new signings of James Milner and Mario Balotelli. They have spent an awful lot of money but it doesn't always guarantee success.

The players that have come in over the summer have cost over 100 million pounds and it will take time for them to settle in and get used to the game.

Players have to get used to the country and culture. As they leave Italy and Spain to move to England, they find a completely different game and it takes time to adjust.

As for Craig Bellamy and Stephen Ireland, you have to remember that professional football has no guarantees. You can't sit back and think you have been treated badly, you have to get ready for that kind of sort of stuff.

They are professionals and will move on and hopefully show City that they were wrong in what they have done.

The match of the weekend was Liverpool against Arsenal. Anfield is a difficult place to get points and new manager Roy Hodgson has done a good job thus far.

He gets his players to fight for the cause and Liverpool have always been a tough team. When you play them you are in for a fight.

That wasn't exactly the case for the last manager, Rafa Benitez, who had come over from the continent and endured some rough times.

In England when you get an English coach you know it will be a high tempo game.

City and Liverpool play on Monday and this should be an exciting game.

City will be looking for the win at home but 'Pool won't lie down and it should be a good clash.

When you look at the other top two teams, Chelsea and Manchester United, you can understand why they will again challenge for the title.

Chelsea were too good fort West Brom who got promoted, and it showed.

Although Brom made a hash of the goals they conceded, Chelsea were good value for the win.

As for United, the bus keeps rolling and they looked well organised and ready for what lies ahead in the win against another promoted team, Newcastle.

These two sides are among the best in Europe, but it will be interesting to see what this weekend holds for the contenders and pretenders.
