Berkeley names its newest head students, prefects
Berkeley students and staff gathered on Friday to officially induct new prefects, house captains and head students.
Proud parents and family members looked on as Head Girl, Dominique Richardson delivered a speech about her duties, responsibilities and the pride she takes in her role.
"It is more than something to put on your resume," she said. It feels awesome to be Head Girl and it is something that I take immense pride in."
Next up was Head Boy, Aarian Lasalle who pointed out the importance of individuality.
"In my role as Head Boy I intend to prove that being different is a good thing," he said.
The special guest speaker for the ceremony was Mrs. Debbie Jones Hunter. Mrs. Hunter was a highly respected athlete in her prime.
She was named the Athlete of the Decade in 1980 for her accomplishments in the 1970s. And she has won countless medals and shattered numerous records.
Mrs. Jones Hunter, a former Berkeley student, became well known for her triumphs at the Carifta Games before she suffered a career-ending injury at a qualifying event for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
She gave an enthusiastic speech and preached the importance of respect, responsibility and time management.
"Don't waste time," she said. "Have fun but get the job done!"
Sharon Sunderaraj, a Berkeley Prefect described the role of a prefect. Some of a prefect's responsibilities include: setting a positive example, inspecting student uniforms and being a peer mentor. Next, proud parents and family members cheered on the students as the names of prefects were announced and given their official prefect pins.
Last but not least, the Berkeley school song was sung and the acting principal congratulated the students.
