Smith just fails in Worlds bid

Long jumper Tyrone Smith was unable to meet the qualifying standard for the World Championships when he competed in Colombia at the weekend.

Smith had to break the 8.05 metre mark to qualify in his own right for next month's Championships, to be held in Berlin, and may now have to rely on the wildcard he has secured from the Bermuda Track and Field Association.

Smith, who travelled to the meet with legendary local triple jumper Brian Wellman, did manage to finish second at the Grand Prix in Bogotá, posting a leap of 7.96 metres in windy conditions.

There was better news from rising Bermuda athlete Shainne Smith who jumped a personal best of 5.97 metres in the long jump and also ran a strong race in the 100 metres hurdles.

Also in action at the weekend were nine athletes from Flyers Track and Field club who are currently competing on the East Coast of the United States.

On Sunday's first day of competition, Dage Minors placed first in the Youth division 3,000 metres and Kameron Creighton placed second in the Intermediate division in the 3,000 metres.

Zeon Robinson and Kaluym Mills, who are both competing overseas for the first time, did not qualify for the next round in the 200 metres although Robinson placed second in his heat.
