Aon signs four-year deal with United
CHICAGO (Bloomberg) — Aon Corp., the world's largest insurance brokerage, will replace American International Group Inc. as jersey sponsor of English league champions Manchester United from June 2010.
Chicago-based Aon, which has offices in Bermuda, signed a four-year agreement, chief executive officer Greg Case said in a conference call. He declined to discuss financial terms.
"They are the No. 1 brand in the No. 1 sport," Case said. The six million United jerseys sold each year would be "walking billboards" for Aon, he said.
AIG, bailed out by the US government, isn't renewing its four-year, £56 million ($91.8 million) contract. United began seeking a replacement sponsor after AIG was first rescued in September with an $85 billion credit line.
Saudi Telecom Co., Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd, Prudential Plc and Indian companies Tata Group and Sahara India Pariwar were among the companies approached.
The Aon accord "clearly strengthens our position as one of the biggest clubs in world football", David Gill, Manchester United chief executive officer, said in a statement.
On January 20, team spokesman Philip Townsend said the club was confident it could improve on the financial terms of its AIG contract with a new partner.
United have football's most valuable team, according to Forbes magazine, which puts their worth at $1.87 billion. The jersey sponsorship accord is "particularly relevant" for Aon's plans to expand its brand in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, Case said.
"We're continuing to grow our global footprint," he said.
