Abuse film to be shown
physical abuse has no place either in the families or community, the Physical Abuse Centre said yesterday.
The centre is bringing the movie to the Island so that Bermudians will be "mindful that this frightening level of misery plagues our communities because of senseless domestic violence,'' it said in a news release.
"Once Were Warriors'', which will be shown tomorrow at the Liberty Theatre, depicts a family of New Zealand Maoris caught in the vise of domestic violence and urbanisation.
New York Times reviewer Ms Janet Maslin called it "a brutally effective family drama. Rough around the edges and crudely obvious at times, it still presents a raw disturbing story of domestic strife''.
The movie is rated `R' and includes profanity, sexual situations, and graphic violence. In the review, director Mr. Lee Tamahori said he hoped it would "stand viewers' hair on end''.
The Physical Abuse Centre yesterday apologised for any offence the movie might cause but also said "the film is based on the harsh realities of domestic violence, and we feel that it is precisely this reality that the public should come to realise''.
"A lot of people really don't understand what goes on,'' said Mrs. June Augustus, vice-president and fundraiser for the organisation. She said many abused women don't leave their husbands because of their children, or for economic reasons.
The film starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for general admission. For tickets telephone 292-4366.
