Goals galore as cup action returns
The Commercial Cup came back with a bang on Saturday with goals galore after several years? hiatus.
However, the final will not be packaged with one of the glamour finals at the end of season but will now form a double-header with the Reserve Knockout final at Wellington Oval on March 4.
Tabletoppers MR Onions easily overcame B Division Boulevard who played the first half hour with nine men and were soon 2-0 down via Andy Bray and Rob Perry strikes.
Onions killed the game with four goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half from Bray, Dave Turner (two) and a diving header from Kian Wookey.
However, Boulevard scored the goal of the game when Vernon Simons blasted a 20-yard free kick into the top corner. Onions the completed the 8-1 rout with two goals in the last five minutes from Dan O?Donovan.
Dandy Town Roots A team twice came from behind to record their first victory of the season as they eliminated North Village Rams 3-2.
Rams took the lead when an onrushing Maceo Dill lobbed a stranded keeper. Roots equalised when a cross from the left by Walter Musson was met at the far post by Lloyd Christopher whose first-time effort took a wicked bounce over the diving keeper.
Village went into half-time 2-1 up after a Ross Lambe penalty following a trip on Dill. Chances were being created by both sides and Roots equalised through Walter Musson midway through the second half.
With the game heading for a draw, Musson steered home a low cross from Paul Cann at the near post to clinch the win.
Devonshire Rec. Lions had no trouble against lowly Prison Officers and cruised to a 9-3 victory thanks to a Philip Clarke hat-trick, two goals each from Dwayne Bean and Shawn Showers and single strikes from Chris Pitcher and Shivaughan Smith. Dwight Richards got two for Prison Officers while Michael Lambe grabbed one.
Newcomers Island XI currently top the B Division with maximum points but still had plenty left in the tank for their cup game as they stuffed C Division Wolves 7-0. Paul Mello hit a hat-trick, two goals came from Steven Simons and one each from Nathan Atcheson and Chris Andrews.
Tuff Dogs advanced into the next round after beating Somerset Bridge Peskies 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw with Dogs? Jeff Franklin cancelling out an early Joe Moniz strike.
Dockyard Falcon?s Gary Trott gave his side an early lead against Vasco Mariners who clawed their way into the next round via an 82nd-minute Joseph Cunha strike and a last-minute winner from Bo Saggar.
Goals by Michael Trott, Sheridan (Baldy) Ming and a Keith Bell thunderbolt sent A Division PHC Raiders through to next round as they beat B Division?s Prospect/Fire 3-1.
Trott poked home in a goalmouth scramble after a Ming free kick rebounded off the bar. An error at the back let Prospect/Fire back in as Andre Bassett fired home but after the break Raiders continued to dominate although poor finishing meant they couldn?t add to the score until Ming made it 2-1. Minutes later Keith Bell latched onto a ball 20 yards out and let rip.
Key West go into the next round without kicking a ball after Devonshire All-Stars forfeited the game after turning up with just four players.
And after conceding 12 goals in the first 45 minutes an under-strength Warwick United called it quits in their game with Robin Hood.
MR Onions Real Men FC absorbed early pressure from Valley and rattled the crossbar with an Alan Moore effort but succumbed to a 43rd minute goal from James Tyrell. Valley grew in confidence in the second half and deservedly ran out 3-0 winners with McDonald Simmons and Kwame Caisey burying the Onions.
Currently topping the C Division, Somerset Extros are hoping for a lengthy cup run after crushing Dandy Town C 13-2. Michael Bremar grabbed four, Troy (Starsky) Govia got a hat-trick while Donnie Simmons, Everett Wellman, Kent Bascome and Gareth Lewis all got on the scoresheet as did Extros? keeper Gladstone (Old Hell) Robinson who bagged a penalty. Dandy Town also put through their own net.
