Onions tighten grip on top spot

MR Onions remain unbeaten and in control of the Commercial A Division after a 2-1 defeat of North Village at the weekend.

Veteran striker Nick Briggs missed a number of easy chances before finally converting in the first half which the pub side dominated.

Village got back into the game after the break and equalised following some poor defending. But Onions? substitute striker Dave Turner won the match when he neatly controlled and finished a cross from the right.

BAA are in second place after a lone strike by Giuseppe Coco was enough to give them the edge over Tuff Dogs.

Meanwhile, Key West slipped to third after sitting out the action during their bye week.

Robin Hood and Lobster Pot were also forced to miss out after a scheduling blunder at Southampton Oval led to the postponement of their game.

Valley finally got off the bottom of the table with a 4-1 victory over PHC via two goals from Jonathan Eve and single strikes from Sean Smith and Mark Bourne. Andre Caines grabbed PHC?s lone effort.

Dandy Town Roots and St. George?s All-Stars ran neck and neck for last year?s B Division title but are finding life tougher in the top flight.

Neither have won so far and they had to settle for a point during a hard fought 4-4 draw at Wellington Oval.

Roots took an early lead through Michael Wells who spotted the ?keeper off his line from 30 yards out. All-Stars equalised almost immediately through Lionel Cann but Roots then went up 3-1 with two goals from Walter Musson including a dipping left-foot volley.

Cann and Stevie Dickinson then struck back to make it 3-3 before Musson completed his hat-trick just before the break to put Roots 4-3 ahead.

Roots looked certain to record their first victory of the season until the dying minutes of the game when Cann completed his hat-trick by smashing a ball home from a tight angle.

In the B Division a hat-trick from Prospect/Fire?s Tracey Easton sunk Somerset Bridge Peskies who got on the scoresheet through Oranthus Turner.

Devonshire Lions scored a goal in each half against Vasco Mariners who clawed back to get a point from a Paul Frias lob and a header on the stroke of full-time. Frias missed out on a hat-trick because of an earlier penalty miss.

Devonshire All-Stars picked up a walkover win against Boulevard who were unable to field a side.

Island XI took on Pest Control and were soon 2-0 up with goals from Nathan Atcheson and Teddy Terceira before Pest Control pulled one back from a breakaway.

Substitute Xavier James settled it for Island XI with a second half hat-trick.

Somerset Extros strengthened their grip on the top of the C Division after a walkover against Warwick Workmen?s Club who turned up at Somerset Cricket Club with just seven men. Originally keen to play the game, the visitors had a rethink when they saw Extros had seven men on the bench.

Extros? nearest rivals, MR Onions Real Men and Dockyard Falcons, played to a 4-4 draw in a thrilling, hard-fought game in St. David?s.

Onions were under the cosh for much of the first half but emerged 1-0 ahead after a fine Joe Roberts? finish.

Soon after the break it was 3-0 with Steve Nowell and Roland Meadows on target. A spectacular comeback from the Falcons saw the visitors net four times in 25 minutes to go in front with goals from Michael Symonds, Dwayne DeRosa and two from Terrence Bean.

In the last minute of the game Nowell was bundled over in the box but his penalty was saved. However, the ref had it re-taken as the ?keeper came off his line and second time around Nowell made no mistake.

Dandy Town Roots C beat Wolves 2-1 in the division?s only other clash. Details of the scorers were unavailable at press time.
