East end pupils win through

artists after winning the top spots in a local poster competition sponsored by the Eastern Lions Club.

Second year St. George's Secondary student Miss Nadine Blake and Roger B.

Chaffee seventh grader Miss Katie Neff created posters which best portrayed the theme of the contest, "An Environment for Peace''.

Eastern Lions Club president Mr. Scott Davis said he was pleased with the work which was submitted by pupils from both schools.

"From looking at all the entries, it was obvious all the students really gave the matter a lot of thought,'' Mr. Davis said.

The pair's posters are among thousands submitted worldwide in the fifth annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.

The organisation sponsors the contest "to underscore the importance of world peace to young people everywhere''.

Their posters now advance to the district competition in New York, competing against entries from numerous schools in the area.

If the Bermuda submissions get through that round, they face another three rounds of international competition.

The international grand prize winner, selected from 24 finalists, will receive $1,500 in cash. The poster champion and two family members will also be flown to New York City for the award ceremony at the United Nations next March.

Remaining finalists receive certificates and $250 cash awards.
