Boxers to fight in States

weekend when they take part in exhibition fights against each other as part of a fight card in Massachusetts on Friday night.

The youngsters will travel as guests of the Police boxing section which is also taking along three policemen, Gregory Todd, Shawn Field Lament and Jeff Baron, to fight on the card against members of the Franklin County Police Department, which is just outside Boston.

The hope of the Police boxing section is to help revive boxing on the Island, back to the level it was in the 1980s when cards were held regularly. Even their own popular Police Boxing Card, a black tie affair, has been dormant in recent years. But all that could change, secretary Terry Maxwell hopes.

"We are confident we can get a Police fight night,'' said Maxwell. "It's been dormant because of a lack of interest in boxing.

"Traditionally we had always had overseas fighters on Police fight night but we haven't recruited from overseas for a number of years and the guys who are here either left or just got old.

"We've tried very hard to get the local guys involved and in fact the three guys who are fighting are all Bermudian.'' In the 1980s the Bermuda Police used to fight the Boston Police Department in annual cards and Mike McDonald, who played a key role in those fights, has been instrumental in arranging Friday's card.

And to encourage youngsters into the sport, the Bermuda Police have allowed the youngsters -- Charles Signor (13), Jahvon Washington (12), Melvin Martin (13) and Kacey Smith (10) -- to use their facilities at Prospect.

"It gives the kids a bit of pride in themselves, and gets them in contact with the Police as well,'' said Maxwell.

"We've got a proper gym up here, a beautiful gym in fact. We're trying our best to get it up and running again. In the middle 1980s it (Police card) was a huge success when we had 13 to 15 fights. We're aiming to try to get that back again.''
