Anderson advances
day during play in the 67th annual Coral Beach Club Invitational yesterday where no less than five quality matches lasted for more than two-and-a-half hours.
Topping the list was the exciting encounter in the men's singles open between the unseeded pair of Alex Anderson and Vito Lundoe which saw Anderson come out on top 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, after battling from behind every set.
After losing the first set 6-3, Anderson was down 3-0 in the second before running off six straight games to level the match at a set apiece.
But the third was a picture of the first two with Lundoe, holding a 3-1 advantage before Anderson ran off four straight games to take a 5-3 lead with serve to come. He double faulted for the first time and his game faltered, allowing Lundoe to break and hold to level the match at 5-5.
Anderson however broke back and held to win the marathon contest 7-5 in the third set.
"He just kept serving and volleying very well,'' Anderson said of his Swedish opponent who is new to the Island. "It was a great match and we expect to hear a lot from Vito over the next months.'' In other action, men's fifth seed Michael Curry went the distance before beating John Johnson 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 while third seed Dean Mello outduelled Price Lowensetin 6-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Debbie Harper outlasted Julie Lunn 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 and the unseeded pair of Kathy Stuhler and Ann Jones upset third seeds Gretchen Devlin and Barbara Lambert 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Earl Leader, top seed in the men's 45, made short work of Adamson, winning 6-1, 6-1 while American Mike Gorton Jr. defeated Graham Boyle 6-2, 6-0 while his father Mike Gorton Sr. was being upset by Ronald Graff 6-1, 6-2.
