Government was recently rapped by Shadow Education Minister Ms Jennifer Smith for failing to complete any education scheme.

She said there had been a ten-year pause before construction began at Stonington Campus.

And she criticised Government's financial commitment to education.

But Dr. Saul said $300,000 had been put aside in the 1993/4 Capital Budget for completion of the staff building now under construction at Stonington.

He also said Government had provided money over the years for capital development, and this had been deposited by the College in a fund.

The cash could be used for design work and site preparation for the next building, North Hall.

Dr. Saul said North Hall was expected to cost about $10 million. To meet these costs, provision had been made in the Capital expenditure plans for 1994/95 and 1995/96.

The minister said more than $30 million had been forked out since 1980 on capital works at Stonington Campus. This confirmed Government's commitment to that project, and education in general.

"There certainly has been no prolonged pause in this very substantial construction project, and none is anticipated,'' said Dr. Saul.
