Bromby in hunt at US regatta
Canada, lies in third place after the opening three races of the prestigious Bacardi Cup taking place this week off Miami, Florida.
In the 70th anniversary of the Star class regatta, Bromby and Bjorn finished fourth in the first race on Sunday, sixth on Monday, when they were forced to cross the line again after a premature start, and second yesterday.
"The winds were a little lighter and we had a good day today,'' said Bromby last night. "The bad news is that Mark Reynolds (of the US) won again.'' Reynolds of San Diego, a four-time champion at this regatta and two-time Olympic medal winner, is sailing with crew Magnus Liljedahl of Florida and has so far won all three races.
"But he isn't really as dominating as the results suggest,'' added Bromby.
"All the races have been very close.'' Reynolds admitted after yesterday's race: "We we lucky to stay ahead.'' Sixty two crews representing eight countries are entered in the regatta which was sailed on the opening two days under shifty, puffy winds of 10-14 knots with a light chop on Biscayne Bay.
Racing continues through Friday with scores based on the best five of six finishes.
Previously Bromby has sailed in the Bacardi Cup with his Olympic partner, Bermudian Lee White. But the two sailors went their separate ways after the 1996 Games, sailed off Savannah, Georgia, where they finished a disappointing 13th in the Star class.
