Stirring `de' pot: Reggae renegade takes satiric aim at the political games we
ERROR RG P4 9.7.1998 A story in yesterday's Today section incorrectly stated that reggae songwriter Ras Mykkal's two singles "Three Blind Mice'' and "Rude Boy Inna de House'' were pulled for review by the Bermuda Broadcasting Commission. They were taken off the air by Bermuda Broadcasting Company for a review by the Broadcasting Commission.
A local reggae dub musician will be heating up the airwaves again with a new politically-charged single CD entitled "Shuffle de Deck''.
Artist Ras Mykkal stepped into the spotlight previously with his two singles, "Three Blind Mice'' and "Rude Boy Inna de House''.
The songs stirred controversy when they were pulled for review by the Bermuda Broadcasting Commission for their political content.
Ras Mykkal said his latest single was accepted by the Commission and he was awaiting a formal letter of approval.
"Shuffle de Deck'' is a satire about the recent Cabinet re-shuffling, turncoat MP, Grace Bell, and former Transport Minister Wayne Furbert.
And Ras Mykkal alludes to controversies surrounding the Colin Coxall affair, Quinton Edness, and John Irving Pearman.
He pokes fun at Premier Pamela Gordon "shuffling de deck'' and telling "Big Mac Burgess'' to "forget the hamburger and drop the lawsuit''.
Ras Mykkal, who is a photographer for The Royal Gazette and The Mid-Ocean News explained that he has received many positive comments about the political and social commentary contained in his music.
But he said his success has taken him by surprise, stating: "I have no personal musical background''.
"I began writing poetry in Jamaica, and I learned to write in parables -- where you saying something without saying it directly,'' he said.
"I hope my stuff is thought-provoking and somewhat hilarious. I hope that politicians would see it as a mirror, and see certain things about themselves,'' he added.
The three singles are not available for purchase by the general public, but will be on Ras Mykkal's new CD expected to be released in August.
Ras Mykkal said he is anxiously awaiting the upcoming debate expected to take place between Opposition leader Jennifer Smith and Premier Gordon -- and plans to write a song about it called "The Cat Fight''.
