Rivals resume battle in Friendship clash
go by, tonight's Friendship Trophy clash at PHC Stadium between these teams should provide plenty of excitement.
Few in the crowd will have forgotten the thriller these teams produced in a night league match at Devonshire Rec back on November 1, 1991 when Boulevard eventually won 5-4 in a game that swung back and forth, producing eight different scorers.
In that same season, the last time Cougars were in the First Division, the Devonshire team were again beaten by the odd goal, this time 3-2 after they led 2-0 just 14 minutes into the match.
And their only meeting so far this season was also a close affair with the teams sharing the points in a 2-2 draw after Cougars had looked destined for their first win in the league.
They eventually accomplished that on Sunday by upsetting North Village 1-0 and that should give them a tremendous boost for tonight's outing against their fiercest rivals.
A couple of weeks ago Cougars were written off as relegation certainties, but the 2-2 draw against Boulevard and then Sunday's win over the Red Devils shows that they still intend to make a fight for survival despite the slow start to this season.
Cougars coach Mark Jennings said after the Village win that the club's aim was to survive and not worry about winning cup competitions. However, with so much pride at stake this evening, it's highly unlikely they'll hand Boulevard victory on a platter.
And while Boulevard themselves are not enjoying the best of fortunes in the league, they will also be hoping one of the cup competitions can help turn things around.
Recently they managed to reach a second straight Martonmere Cup final, only to lose their title to Vasco.
A women's FA Cup match will start the action off at 7.00 when Somerset Terminators take on Dandy Stars.
