Airline back on schedule as strike is called off

the 7 a.m. flight from New York City which has been cancelled, local manager Mrs. Carole DeCouto said last night following a resolution of the flight attendants' strike.

The strike was called off too late to save the early morning flight, she said.

Mrs. DeCouto said the airline was advising ticket holders to arrive for their flights as scheduled.

For the last five days American Airlines' local staff have been battling to find seats for hundreds of stranded passengers here and abroad.

But thanks to cooperation from other airlines serving Bermuda -- especially Continental which helped by flying in wide-bodied planes -- same-day seats were found for nearly everyone.

Some college football players and supporters were a little late arriving on the Island to practise for their Saturday game. And some 40 visitors were forced to extend their Bermuda holiday on Sunday night after American Airlines cancelled its 7 a.m. flight yesterday.

However, "there were no real problems'', Mrs. DeCouto said.

"Bermuda handled it very well,'' she added. "I don't want to say the impact was minimal because many people were inconvenienced.'' Bermuda Hotel Association head Mr. David Dodwell, who manages the Reefs, said there was concern among hoteliers that guests would be lost over the busy Thanksgiving weekend.

However, during the strike, there was hardly any impact.

One hotel even made money. Marriott's Castle Harbour Resort took in some 25 guests stranded at the Airport, which made up for a few cancellations, resident manager Mr. Tim Terceira said.

However, he added, "We like our visitors to take away pleasant memories, but the strike might have taken away the pleasure and added a little end-of vacation stress.'' Horizons also reported some extended stays, by people already staying at the hotel who could not get flights out.

Refunds were going to be given to the many people expected to have been stranded over Thanksgiving, Mrs. DeCouto said.

However, before the strike ended, American fulfilled its obligation to passengers by getting them to their destinations the same day on other carriers at no extra cost to them, she said.

Those who did not, would get refunds.
