Weakened Colts foiled in bid to postpone game
Friendship Trophy match at Somerset against holders Dandy Town postponed on the grounds that they will be weakened by the unavailability of four players because of youth squad commitments.
Jahmah Samuels, Makonnen Hollis, Keishon Smith and Marvin Lewis of Devonshire Colts and two Dandy Town players, Nathan Webb and Ascento Russell, were in contention for places in the squad for the trip to Jamaica for the Pan American Games qualifier against Canada.
The squad was to be picked last night after training and was not available at press time.
This will be the second meeting between the teams in three days, the clubs having played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. The result was enough to put Town in sole possession of first place, as substitute Diallo Sharrieff's equaliser also denied Colts what would have been only their second win of the season.
Colts will be hoping the Friendship Trophy will bring about a change of fortunes for them, having not won since the opening day of the league season when they edged by Vasco.
Sharrieff will likely return to the Town lineup tonight, in the heart of the defence to fill the gap left by Troy Durham who was sent off on Sunday for the second time this season. That should have brought the defender a one match ban but the despicable act that followed -- striking linesman Peter Sousa -- could bring him a long suspension.
The club held an emergency meeting on Sunday night and banned Durham for 10 years and swift action by the Bermuda Football Association is also anticipated.
Despite that setback Town should go into the match as favourites. Colts' previous appearance at Somerset this season ended with a 4-2 loss to North Village in the Martonmere Cup. Since then, however, Colts have tightened up considerably at the back, having conceded just three goals in their last four matches.
Tonight's action begins at 7.00 with the Shield match between Social Club and Paget.
Keishon Smith.
