Social Club made to suffer again

Social Club 147 Western Stars scored another emphatic victory over Social Club when they hammered them by 192 runs in the second round of the Central Counties Cup on Saturday at St. John's Field.

Again winning the toss, Social Club sent their opponents in to bat first and although Stars did not enjoy a big opening stand as they had a week earlier when Treadwell Gibbons and Albert Steede piled on 286 in a convincing league victory, the home team still amassed a gigantic total thanks to two individual centuries.

Steede hit another ton, blasting 144 with 11 fours and seven sixes while Jeff Richardson slammed 11 fours and six sixes in a knock of 107. The pair added 191 for the third wicket after Social Club had enjoyed some early success by having the champions 54-2.

Elvis Richardson was the most successful Social Club bowler, taking three for 40 off eight overs while Webster Mills claimed two for 56 from nine.

At one stage Social Club were actually faring slightly better than Stars in their batting as they lost their second wicket on 72. However, the target was always going to be too steep and although opener Thomas Brangman led the way with 48 there was little support in the late order as they went from 100-3 to 147 all out.

Dwayne Adams was the next high man for Social Club with 30 as he and Brangman put on 58 for the second wicket before Adams became the first victim of youth squad bowler Justin Robinson.

The fifth bowler used by Stars, the youngster showed his promise by picking up four for 34 off 10 overs, the wicket of Adams coming in his first over. After Adams and Brangman went in the space of four runs in the 70s, Stars took firm control and were even able to bowl Steede, with success, late in the match as the Bermuda captain responded with three for 16 from three overs of spin.

Captain Arnold Manders was the most economical of the seven Stars bowlers, finishing with one for 13 off 10 overs with three maidens.
