Duo gearing for world championships

Championships in September in their sights, competed with some success in a tournament in Tampa, Florida, on the weekend.

It was a two-round, two-day tournament with the tricks on Saturday and the slalom on Sunday.

Richardson placed second in the tricks with 3,320 points and in the slalom placed seventh out of 13 skiers in the Men's II Division.

"I fell towards the end of my first pass, which was the toe-hold tricks but then in another pass, the hand pass, I made the whole pass,'' explained Richardson who is gearing up for his sixth world championship.

Butterfield also performed with credit in her first tournament, making her whole first pass, which was the hand pass, before falling early in the second, toe-hold trick. She collected 790 points, having set herself a target of 1,000 points.

The following day saw Butterfield fail to finish the whole pass in the first round before improving tremendously in the second round. Her maximum boat speed reached was 30 mph with 15-off (60-foot rope) and the maximum speed for qualifying for the World Championships is 34 mph with 15-off.

"Overall it was a good tournament for both of us and we made the adjustment from salt to fresh water,'' said Richardson.

In 1991 Richardson, as Bermuda's lone participant, placed 28th out of 37 countries in the World Championships in Austria. This year just over 40 teams are expected to compete in Singapore between September 6-12.

Butterfield has been training with Richardson for the last three years.
