Over $18,000 raised for W. African appeal
The Bermuda Red Cross has raised a whopping $18,000 since August 2 for the West African Crises Appeal ? that?s $7,000 raised since Friday afternoon.
Director Ann Spencer-Arscott thanked the public for their generosity and said all funds raised would be sent to the British Red Cross.
?They will direct the funds to the appropriate Red Cross Society in the affected country, or take care of the purchasing and distribution of supplies needed,? she said.
Drought and locusts ravaged last year?s harvest in West Africa, leaving an estimated 3.6 million people in Niger and 1.6 million in neighbouring Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso short of food. The lives of tens of thousands of children are under threat of starvation.
Members of the public can donate funds directly into the following West Africa Crisis Appeal accounts:
Bank of Bermuda account: 701-19842;
Bank of Butterfield: 20-006-060-663859-200;
